PLEASE NOTE: FORTRESS MOUNTAIN IS CURRENTLY CLOSED
Fortress Mountain is a little off the beaten track, in fact the track to the ski hill is more than a little beaten. But despite this, Fortress has a dedicated following of skiers, mostly hardcore, who are more interested in the powder conditions and trails, than in the decks and après-ski.
It's at Fortress that you're most likely to find the skiers with the duct tape patched ski gear, rather than the latest designer styles. Because of its slightly out of the way location it's generally less of a vacation destination and more of a locals haunt.
After a rocky start to the 2005/06 season the ski hill should be more organised and operational for the 2006/07 season, however it's worth checking out their website to keep up-to-date with what's happening before you make firm commitments.
Ski school is offered for: munchkins (3-5), lil' brats (6-12), yetis (13-17), kids (6-17), adults (17-100), adventure and ladies only. Group lessons are limited to 8 students per instructor.
Daycare is planned for 19 mths - 6 yrs old, including a dedicated magic carpet and dedicated skiing area, but check on availability of this before making firm commitments.
Fortress stats:
The Alberta Luge Association has also picked Fortress to train for the Winter Olympics 2010 in Whistler, BC.
Accommodation is available on the hill, with six chalets each sleeping 10 comfortably. They include a full kitchen with sitting area, dining room and woodburning fireplace.
Fortress Mountain Lodge offers a variety of on-hill, ski-in/ski-out accommodation packages with all rooms having a private washroom. At the moment the lodge is undergoing renovation, so check on progress before making any firm commitments.
Food is available, although was very basic for the 2005/06 season, limited pretty much to burgers and coffee in a tent. It is hoped that the 2006/07 season will see the lodge open for food, and indoor washrooms!
